Low disk space. What to do?

Did you know…

That it is possible to disable Microsoft tray notification about your hard disk space being low?
When the free space on your hard drive reaches 200 megabytes, you start receiving the following message:
You are running out of disk space on [drive]. To free space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary files, click here.

As the free space on the hard drive decreases, you receive this warning more and more frequently.
This feature can be disabled from the registry. Please note, however, that if you modify the registry incorrectly, you might cause serious problems to your computer. So, better to use disk space analyzers, for example, ActiveSMART.

You might also want to think twice before disabling the low disk space warning. When out of space, Windows suspends System Restore service – and not just on the drive that has low disk space, but on all drives. This means you will not be able to restore your system should you need to.

And here is another thing: when your Windows is out of RAM memory, it will try to create virtual memory using some of your hard disk space. If your disk space is low, it may cause applications failures, large files refusing to open, or even your system crashing. In this case the solution is to add more RAM into your PC or laptop.

At any rate, if receiving the low disk space warning, the wisest decision is to take some time and effort into clearing your hard disk up. You can try ActiveSMART – hard drive analyzing software which helps to keep track on your free space and never have it low.
